このサイトの最初の記事は、2008年。
当時は、思ったことをそのまま書いていました。その行為自体が、自分にとってあらゆる面でプラスになっている事を強く自覚していたので。その関係で、今では削除したくなるようなものもそりゃあ沢山あります。しかし、成長の軌跡なのであえてそのままにしてありますが、そっと歯に噛んで流してもらえたら幸いです。それについては、切実に何も言わないでほしい！
そして18年経った今、このサイトを「美容師の思考と経験と技術の手記」として再構成することにしました。気づけば長くなった美容師としてのキャリアと、その長さ故どこかの誰かに少しでも役に立てたらなと、最近になって強く考えるようになったのがこの再構成のきっかけとして大きいです。特に若い子にとって何かの役に立てたら本当に嬉しい。
だって… ITが世を変え、AIがさまざまな仕事に影響を与え始めた今現在でさえ、この美容師という仕事は以前と変わらずどころか今後ますます、それはそれは強いスキルとして君臨し続けるような気がしてならないからです。
僕にとって髪を切ることと生きること、考えることと感じる事は、最初からひと続きのものだったのだけど——今になってそれを初めて、誰かの為に言語化したい と思ってきました。時間がかかったけど、多分…歳を重ねたからでしょう。
時間かかるとは思いますが、ぼちぼちやっていきます。
著者について
埼玉に産まれ、東京で修行し、沖縄に渡って独立。沖縄で自分の空間を作ることが、20代前半の時の大きな夢でした。
沖縄で美容室を経営して、なんだかんだ充実した時間を過ごしていたのに、ある時にとんでもないチャンスを自ら掴んでサンフランシスコへ渡った。まさに『行動したら、次の現実』であった。今年で美容師歴29年になります。
この仕事を続けるほどに、ひとつの確信が強くなっていく。髪がある世界であれば、国の垣根にとらわれず、自分だけの力で生きていくことができる——美容師はそういう仕事なのではないかと。髪に意識がいくレベルには、世界が平和である限り。
人生の大きな転機の1つはエフィラージュカットとの出会いでした。フランス発祥のドライカット技法で、突然今までの不可能を可能にされました。この技法に出会ってから、全てが変わった気がしている。造る髪型だけじゃなく、美容師としての哲学的な核みたいなものまでも。その結果として、日本を出た。出ないわけにはいかなかった。村上春樹風にいうならば。
サンフランシスコという街は、おもしろい場所です。何がと言われても書ききれない。僕はここが好きだ。科学と非科学、ハイクラスとストリート——その交差点から出ないように奮闘し、考え続けることが、いつのまにか僕のスタイルになっている。
このサイトで扱うこと
大きく分けると、5つのカテゴリで構成していく事を考えている。
HAIR WORKS NOTES — ヘアサイエンス、僕が育ててきたテクニックの手記。エフィラージュなどのドライカット、美容技術全般の深掘り。感覚で語られがちな部分も大切に、でも理論も尊重し、科学と非科学の交差点で独自の美容観を今まで以上に積極的に記してゆきたい。
LAB NOTES — 僕の開発するプロダクト、Hair Caffe Labの開発記録。うまくいったことだけじゃなく、失敗した実験も、なるべくリアルに書き残したいと思っている。
ESPRIT 3.0 — 「美容師3.0」という概念の提案。探求。技術・科学・哲学・語学・ビジネスを統合した、次世代の美容師像について。このサイトで一番書きたいところかもしれない。ほんの一握りの精鋭美容師に届けば、それで良い。皆に共感される内容ではない事は自負している。

ART / CREATION — 音楽、映画、写真。仕事と直接関係のないところで得た視点が、じわじわと仕事を深めていく事はもはや疑いようのない事実。ここにハイクラスとストリートの交差点がある。影響を受けた創造物に関して、存分に語る時間も作りたいと考えている。
ESSAY — 上記に収まらない、考察と私見。
このサイトに向いている人
思考することを、面倒がらない人に読んでほしいと思っている。
僕は今勢いの止まらない 動画メディア に少し疲れている。まず、インプットするのに、僕にとっては時間がかかる。ここを深掘りすると長くなるので割愛するが、やっぱり活字を読み解ける人間じゃないと、他と大きく差とつけて頭一つ前に出る事は出来ない。そう考えている。
なのでこのサイトでも、メインは活字。活字の洪水でいい。
「なぜその技術が成立するのか」「その成分は何をしているのか」「美容師という職業は、社会にとって何なのか」「そもそも生きるって、一体何なのか。」——こういう問いに、ちょっとでもゾクゾクする人に向けて書いている。
活字を読むことに慣れていて、すぐに答えを求めるよりも、考える過程そのものを楽しめる人。美容師という職業を、技術職としてだけじゃなく、知的な探求の対象として面白がれる人。ラインを超えて外に出たい人。そんな人と、このサイトを通じて繋がれたらと思っている。
逆に言えば、簡単に手早く役立つ美容情報や、バズるヘアスタイルを探している人には、もっと向いている場所が他にあると思う。そのタイミングではないというだけで、またいつかここに戻ってきてくれたら嬉しい。
Hair Caffe Lab について
このサイトでの探求と並行して、プロダクト開発を続けている。
Hair Caffe Lab は、サンフランシスコで開発・販売する美容師発のヘアケアブランドだ。現在のラインナップは、エフィラージュカットと29年のサロンワークから導き出した「Leave-In Treatment Mist」（No.115 / No.215）。
僕の研究の成果が、手に取れる形になったもの。そう思ってもらえたら嬉しい。

The first post on this site was in 2008.
Back then, I wrote whatever came to mind — and I knew, clearly, that doing so was good for me in every way. Because of that, there are now quite a few posts I’d honestly rather delete. But they’re a record of growth, so I’ve left them as they are. If you happen to stumble upon them, please just quietly let them pass. On that point, I sincerely ask: please say nothing.
Eighteen years later, I’m rebuilding this site as “notes on a hairdresser’s thoughts, experiences, and craft.” My career has grown longer than I expected — and lately, more than ever, I’ve been thinking that maybe some of it could be useful to someone out there. That’s been the biggest driver behind this reconstruction. If it turns out to be helpful to younger people especially, that would genuinely make me happy.
Because… even now, as IT reshapes the world and AI begins to affect all kinds of work, I can’t shake the feeling that hairdressing will continue to stand as an extraordinarily powerful skill — unchanged, if not growing stronger. As long as people care about their hair.
Cutting hair and living, thinking and feeling — these have always been one continuous thing for me. But now, for the first time, I want to put it into words for someone else. It took time. Probably… that’s what getting older does.
It’ll take a while, but I’ll get there slowly.
About the Author
Born in Saitama. Trained in Tokyo. Moved to Okinawa and went independent. Building my own space in Okinawa was a dream I carried through my early twenties.
I was running a salon there — genuinely fulfilling work — when I reached out and grabbed an unexpected opportunity with both hands, and crossed over to San Francisco. Truly, “take action and the next reality appears.” Now in my 29th year as a hairdresser.
The longer I do this work, the stronger one conviction grows. As long as there are people with hair in this world, a hairdresser can live by their own abilities alone, across any border. As long as the world is peaceful enough for people to care about their hair.
One of the major turning points in my life was encountering the Effilage cut — a dry-cutting technique from France that suddenly made what felt impossible, possible. Everything changed after I found this method. Not just the hairstyles I could create, but something like a philosophical core as a hairdresser. And as a result, I left Japan. I had no choice but to leave. In the style of Haruki Murakami, if you will.
San Francisco is a fascinating place. There’s too much to explain in a few words. I love it here. Navigating the intersection of science and intuition, high-end and street — staying in that space, continuing to think from it — has become my style, without me quite realizing it.
What This Site Covers
I’m thinking of organizing things into five main categories.
HAIR WORKS NOTES — Hair science, and notes on the techniques I’ve developed. Deep dives into Effilage and other dry-cutting methods and craft in general. I want to honor the intuitive side while respecting theory — writing from the intersection of science and non-science, building a view of hairdressing that’s distinctly mine.
LAB NOTES — Development notes from Hair Caffe Lab, my product line. Not just what worked — I want to document the failed experiments as honestly as possible.
ESPRIT 3.0 — A proposal and exploration of the concept of “Hairdresser 3.0”: the integration of technique, science, philosophy, language, and business. This might be what I most want to write about on this site. If it reaches even a handful of the right people, that’s enough. I know it won’t resonate with everyone, and I’m fine with that.

ART / CREATION — Music, film, photography. That perspectives gained outside of work quietly deepen the work itself is, at this point, an undeniable fact. The intersection of high-end and street lives here too. I want to write freely about the creative work that has shaped me.
ESSAY — Observations and opinions that don’t fit neatly into the above.
Who This Is For
I want this to be read by people who don’t find thinking to be a burden.
Personally, I’m getting a little tired of the unstoppable rise of video media. It takes me time to absorb things that way. I could go deeper on this, but I’ll leave it for now — I’ll just say: I genuinely believe that people who can read and work through written language have a meaningful edge.
So on this site, the main currency is text. A flood of text, and that’s fine.
“Why does this technique actually work?” “What is this ingredient doing?” “What does hairdressing mean to society?” “What does it even mean to be alive?” — written for people who feel something when they encounter questions like these.
People comfortable with long-form reading. Who enjoy the process of thinking more than arriving quickly at answers. Who see hairdressing as an intellectual pursuit as much as a technical one. Who want to step past the line and go somewhere further.
On the other hand — if you’re looking for quick, practical hair tips or trending styles, there are better places for that. It’s just a matter of timing. Come back whenever you’re ready.

Hair Caffe Lab is a hairdresser-founded brand developed and sold in San Francisco. The current lineup — Leave-In Treatment Mist No.115 and No.215 — came out of the Effilage method and 29 years of salon work.
